Hopepunk

A 4-week Somatic Journey from Eco-Grief to Embodied Resilience

Do you care deeply for the world but feel anxious, hopeless, or overwhelmed? Join me on a journey of body-centered practices that will help you embody more hope, solidarity, empowerment, and resilience.

What is Eco-Grief?

If you feel overwhelmed by climate change and environmental destruction you’re not alone and your feelings are valid.

Eco-Grief, Climate Anxiety, and other climate emotions are all normal responses when we’re afraid for our planet’s future and heartbroken by the loss of the places and species that we love.

  • According to Our World in Data at least 73% of people worldwide have expressed some concern about climate change and believe it is a serious threat to the planet.

  • In an international survey on youth attitudes (ages 16-25):

    • 75% said the “future is frightening”

    • 56% said that “humanity is doomed”

    • 45% said their feelings about climate change negatively affected their daily lives

Hopepunk believes in the possibility of a better future in the face of difficult realities. To fight with radical compassion, hope, collaboration, and empathy instead of cynicism, nihilism, or fatalism. Hopepunk chooses to act even when things seem bleak, and invites us to fall in love with the world that we so deeply wish to change.

What To Expect

This 4-week journey will follow The Work That Reconnects Spiral by Joanna Macy. Each week we will utilize different nature-based and body-centered exercises to deepen our connection with our bodies, our community, and the living world. For a list of EcoSomatic Practices visit www.somatic.earth/about.

Week 1: Gratitude

We’ll begin by unpacking our wide range of climate emotions. Then we’ll connect with feelings of gratitude, love, and care to nourish our nervous systems and remind us of why this work matters.

  • Week 1 Skills: Presence, Grounding, Embody Gratitude.

Week 2: Honoring our Pain

When we think about what we love it’s natural to transition into grieving the things we have lost or fear to lose. In much of western society grief is considered taboo. It’s something that we’re taught to suppress or get over quickly. But honoring our pain is an important step in this journey. When we acknowledge our pain we are giving it the respect and recognition it deserves. Making space to listen to our sorrow, fear, outrage, and despair allows those feelings to complete their natural biochemical process in our bodies rather than getting trapped in our nervous systems.

  • Week 2 Skills: Holding Space, Self-Acceptance, Emotional Regulation.

Week 3: Connection

Our pain reveals the depth of our care and love. Recognizing our care and love as vital strengths renews our self-efficacy and also reminds us of our interconnectedness. This stage deepens our roots within the wider ecological world which can help direct our attention towards accessing the web of resources within our communities.

  • Week 3 Skills: Resourcing, Interdependence.

Week 4: Going Forth

In our last week we allow ourselves to envision the world we desire to live in and commit to action steps to make that world a reality.

  • Week 4 Skills: Embodied Visioning, Joyful Action.
